Decent Comics: "A Thorn By Any Other Name" by Levitz, Staton, and Layton

Hey, hey, hey, Groove-ophiles! It's time for another jammin' JSA adventure courtesy Paul Levitz, Joe Staton, and Bob Layton! "A Thorn By Any Other Name" (from All Star Comics #72, February 1978) brings back the original Thorn, who happens to be a baddie on Earth-2! I miss the good old days when a villain (or, as in this case, villainess) had a bunch of thugs wearing matching costumes to show whom their boss was. You could really see where those Groovy Age villains invested all'a that stolen loot!

Bad news: this is Bob Layton's last time inking JSA over Joe Staton's pencils. The end of an era!

  1. I stopped collecting comics for 9 years shortly before this, fool that I was. So I missed this issue and will have get it through eBay. Sad to hear this was the last issue of the Staton/Layton team. They were incomparable together.

  2. You make a great point. The heyday of the "henchman" is long past and more's the pity. I love those moments when the hired thugs are grousing about the plan or their role in it. It's one of the most human things we see, just some guys bitching about the job like most folks, except their job is crime.

  3. That was a fun read. Thanks! I knew Sportsmaster from Batman: The Brave & The Bold, as well as Young Justice, but this was my first time seeing him in comic book action. (Now I can't decide whether HE isn't as lame as I thought; or whether Alan Scott is way lamer than I ever suspected.)

As for the rest of ya, the purpose of this blog is to (re)introduce you to the great comics of the 1970s. If you like what you see, do what I do--go to a comics shop, bookstore, e-Bay or whatever and BUY YOUR OWN!
