Decent Comics: "The Secret of Mr. Tawny" by Bridwell, Newton, and Schaffenberger

Wotta coincidence, Groove-ophiles! Yesterday we had the "ultimate mutant" Alpha morphing into something-above-human. Today Doctor Weldon Ambrose does pretty much the same thing, but with a much different ending. And since the SHAZAM team is going for a bit more realistic look and feel than what had been previously associated with Captain Marvel and company, they attempt to make talking tiger Mr. Tawny a bit more realistic as well. Do they succeed? You decide!  From World's Finest Comics #259 (July 1979), check out "The Secret of Mr. Tawny" by E. Nelson Bridwell, Don Newton, and Kurt Schaffenberger!

  1. Groove! Greetings! Sorry bro... Once Cpt Marvel and crew were typecast in 1941 or so, the mold was set for Charlie. (Indeed, Charlie is nibbling his way through Marvel Family 28 as part of his bed-time reading. My wife just loves that oldy-moldy smell, LOL. And, if you ask me, the cover must surely have been left over from WW2?)

SO, a more serious Marvel never worked for me. And, the talking Tawny got me to think of Kamandi and Kirby's talking animals.

Oh well... None the less I enjoyed the post!

  3. These stories were my introduction to Don Newton. From The Phantom to Shazam, New Gods and Batman...it's all great to me. Thanks Groove

  4. Truly lovely art by Newton and Schaffenberger. It's a shame that it was Kurt's final story as Don's inker. Love that close-up of Cap at the top of page 9.
